The Colorado State University Extension (CSUE) State 4-H Office is pleased to announce the following STEM grant awards.  Because of these generous funders, Colorado 4-H agents have the means for increasing the implementation of 4-H STEM Youth Development Programming throughout Colorado.

Through 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) out-of-school time programming, the CSUE 4-H STEM AmeriCorps Program will address the CNCS’s national service priority for Education – providing, supporting and facilitating access to services and resources for economically disadvantaged children that contribute to improved educational outcomes, increased likelihood of high school graduation and preparation for success in post-secondary education.  This program is available to all Colorado counties that wish to participate.

4-H National Mentoring Program

Since 2010, National 4-H Council has implemented the 4-H National Mentoring Program (NMP) to expand and enhance mentoring services for youth most in need across the country. This project is supported by an award from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) as part of OJJDP’s national effort to strengthen, expand, and implement youth mentoring activities for millions of young Americans. The 4-H National Mentoring Program provides funding to land-grant universities (LGUs) in 46 states to reach underserved, at-risk, and high-risk youth, with the goals of increasing family relationships, academic success, and social competency.

Beginning in 2018, Colorado State University Extension is offering a two-time national award winning youth preparedness, leadership and educational outreach program known as MyPI (My Preparedness Initiative) for teenagers across Colorado.  MyPI Colorado is a component of the National Youth Preparedness Initiative (MyPI National), a partnership of 18 states and 1 US territory, delivering an innovative and engaging curriculum for America’s teenagers.

Lockheed Martin and National 4‑H Council are on a mission to connect today’s youth to the discovery and exploration of career opportunities in STEM through the development of the 4‑H Career Pathway. Through teaming up with Lockheed Martin, 4‑H provides opportunities youth need to explore STEM, develop skills necessary for success, and immerse themselves in the field of work and experience these skills at work. With the support of Lockheed Martin employees, scientists and engineers from across the country volunteer their time to mentor 4‑H’ers with specific outreach to engage girls and minority youth, who are significantly under-represented in STEM degrees and careers.

National 4-H Council (Council) is proud to collaborate with Lockheed Martin to reach 150,000 youth with Computer Science (CS) programs and engagement. Reach will be achieved through investments in local CS programs, national CS engagement and teen leadership, over the next 12 months. Lockheed Martin’s investment priorities will:

§  Deeply engage five (5) key markets in year-round STEM and CS activities that provide sustained impact backed by proven curriculum and outcomes. Funding will accelerate delivery of computer science curricula and provide a pathway for teen leaders that increases career readiness skills.

§  Support in the growth of National 4-H program to spark interest for under-served youth who are new to STEM. Our commitment to Lockheed includes national programming to engage 150,000 youth (NYSD – Code Your World 2.0), reach under-served communities, and cultivate top talent in Lockheed Martin communities.

4-H Pollinator Habitat Program

National 4-H Council is proud to collaborate with Corteva Agriscience for the 4-H Pollinator Habitat Program (4-H PH). Over the course of three years (2019-2021), this program will educate 30,000 youth nationwide about the importance of pollinators and pollinator habitat and encourage the establishment of quality pollinator habitats. Through this program and a partnership with Pheasants Forever, Corteva Agriscience will engage 4-H youth to help increase pollinator habitats and populations and supporting biodiversity at local Corteva sites. Different sites will be selected each year.

Dear Futures Computer Science Challenge

During the summer of 2018, The Coca-Cola Co. USA invited 18 to 24-year-olds across the U.S. to submit their best ideas to strengthen their communities in the “Dear Future Community” Challenge. Coca-Cola announced Colorado as one of 17 finalists from across the country who will have their ideas turned into reality. Each young adult will be partnered with community experts in their hometown and will be supported with funding from The Coca-Cola Co. USA.  CSU student, Sarah S. is the chosen finalist for Colorado, Denver.  With funding provided by Coca Cola, Sarah is working with CSU Extension 4-H STEM K-12 and Girls Inc of Metro Denver (GIMD), GIMD was selected as a community partner due to existing grant funded work being done with CSUE 4-H STEM K-12.  Sarah’s plan to develop technology programing for high school aged youth and will be implemented in the Clear Creek Schools District during the 2019 – 2020 school year.

During October, 2019 4‑H will launch the 2019 National Youth Science Day (NYSD) challenge, Game Changers. Designed by Google and West Virginia Extension service, Game Changers teaches kids ages 8-14 how to use computer science (CS) to create games, solve problems and engage with topics they’re passionate about.

Game Changers uses physical activity and puzzles to teach kids important CS concepts and problem-solving skills, creating real-world connections between computer science and civic engagement, healthy living and agriculture. Although the challenge includes one computer-based and two unplugged activities to help kids learn CS, all can be completed without internet access.

Through a sponsorship from the US Air Force, Colorado has been selected to receive 4-H NYSD Kits for 1000 youth.  Clear Creek 4-H will host a youth leader mentoring training.  Through the partnership between Clear Creek Schools District and Colorado 4-H, these newly trained teen mentors will work with younger youth during 4-H NYSD.  This computer science oriented “Game Changer” will also promote newly developed 4-H CS after-school programing in the school district.

The Colorado State University Extension (CSUE) Mobile 4-H Energy Lab is one of 3 mobile labs available for 4-H Agent use.  The mobile 4-H STEM labs are a transportable educational resource equipped with projects, activities and materials intended to promote Youth Development experiential learning in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.  The 4-H Mobile Energy Lab has emphasis on energy conversions, production and conservation.

The equipment within the CSUE Mobile 4-H Energy Lab can be utilized for indoor learning opportunities. However, the lab is also equipped with everything needed to set up an outdoor self-contained pop-up 4-H STEM Maker space. This feature makes the CSUE 4-H STEM labs an excellent addition for school fairs, day camps and educational festivals.

The CSUE Mobile 4-H Energy lab is equipped with both solar and wind powered energy capabilities which allows for alternative renewable power generation while in use.  The components for each power source is neatly fastened to display boards for alternative energy teaching opportunities.

Through the power of youth/adult partnerships, Health Rocks! instills in youth participants invaluable confidence and communication skills necessary to make responsible decisions and develop the internal strength to resist risky behaviors.

Health Rocks! utilizes the cornerstone 4‑H “Teens as Teachers” model to build leadership skills, leveraging the influence of young people by engaging teens to empower their peers and families to help establish life-long healthy habits.
